What is an unsuccessful project? If a projects' outcome was not what was initially desired, then this is a learning for everyone in itself. I've worked on a number of projects that have required amendments or cancellations, often can be disappointing. But these must be reviewed, and the gaps identified to not repeat in the future. The biggest failure of any project is not doing a review at an agreed timeframe after completion. A review is critical to ensure repetition of the wins and identifying the errors. This is when the true result of the project is recognised. Sometimes, what may have been initially thought of as a success may fail, and failures may lead to greater success.
