The expectations of me within the first month in the role was to listen, observe and learn. One month FIFO is only two eight-day swings here, which isn't long enough to encourage big changes unless they impact safety. I spent my time getting to know the individuals within the teams. Listening to their stories, both personally and professionally.
This time allowed me to build a high level of mutual respect and trust that has continued to be maintained - ultimately becoming the greatest benefit in this role.
With trust, changes are easy to implement, teams are willing to go the 'extra mile'. Safety improvements come naturally as people look out for one another and feel supported to make and challenge decisions.
